Obesity — considered a health care epidemic in the US — is associated with increased risk for some of the leading causes of preventable death. Yet, it is suboptimally managed. Many physicians remain uncertain about its pathophysiology and chronic disease status, making underdiagnosis and undertreatment common. Successful outcomes are also hampered by missing/ineffective provider communication and knowledge deficits in the use of behavioral therapies in combination with pharmacotherapy. In this CME program leading specialists will discuss the factors that contribute to the definition of obesity as a chronic disease, evidence-based behavioral interventions, and the combination of behavioral interventions with pharmacotherapy.
