Course Overview

This course will include pharmacotherapy considerations in the pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative MBS patient, as well as issues related to drug absorption and drug dosing. Current and future research projects in the area of drug absorption after bariatric surgery will be discussed.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, dietitians, and other clinical personnel involved with the care of the metabolic and bariatric surgery patient.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participants should be able to:

  • Discuss drug dosing concerns in the bariatric surgery population
  • Recognize when modifications to medication regimens will be necessary due to bariatric surgery
  • Describe unique medication challenges, including anticoagulation issues, in the bariatric surgery patient
  • Summarize the current literature regarding drug absorption changes in post-bariatric surgery patients.
