Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course the learners will be able to:

• Describe the factors that predispose to weight gain including genetic factors, relevant neuropeptides, alterations in energy expenditure and environmental factors.

• Describe the appropriate steps in the evaluation of both adult and pediatric obese patients.

• List the options that are available to treat obese patients including dietary strategies, physical activity interventions, medications and surgical options. Attendees should be able to describe an approach to determining which treatment is most appropriate for specific patient types.

• Describe appropriate behavioral approaches to the treatment of obese patients.
