Course Overview and Target Audience

This course will provide foundational and detailed information for the dietitian and other healthcare practitioners involved with bariatric patients. Topics will include: (1) Sleeve Gastrectomy from the Registered Dietitian perspective; identifying contributors to weight regain and strategies for intervention and treatment (2) Use of Motivational Interviewing in nutritional counseling of patients; (3) Nutritional recommendations for pregnancy and lactation for bariatric surgery patients; and (4) Sports nutrition recommendations when working with bariatric surgery athletes.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss nutritional care of the Sleeve Gastrectomy patient; strategies for weight regain intervention
  • Utilize Motivational Interviewing when counseling patients
  • Discuss nutritional care of the bariatric surgery patient who becomes pregnant to ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby
  • Discuss sports nutrition strategies when working with bariatric surgery patients.
